World wide it is estimated that 50 to 80% of pregnant women develop pain in the low back and pelvic region over the course of their pregnancy.
It is also documented that in the 1990s around 15 million women in the United States had practiced Yoga at some time in their lives.
Increasingly, women and sometimes their doctors are wanting nonpharmacologic treatments that would fall in the category of being Complementary and Alternative (CAM). Yoga is one such modality.
Now, for the first time in the Orthodox medical literature a study has been published showing the extreme effectiveness of yoga for the treatment of pregnancy related back and pelvic pain.
In this study, they took 60 pregnant women. The women were divided into two groups. One group got yoga therapy and the other group got standardized posture orientation as provided in a pamphlet. The treatment went on for 10 weeks.
The results of the study are very exciting. The average pain score was significantly lower in the yoga group than the posture orientation group. In addition tests to provoke pain in the back were also significantly decreased after just 10 yoga sessions.
If you have pregnant friends who have back or pelvic pain, now more than ever it is obvious that yoga can be significantly helpful in relieving their pain.
