Can Probiotics Help You Lose Weight?

The number of bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract greatly outnumber the cells in your body; your gut has 100 trillion microorganisms while you have about 10 trillion cells in your body!

What this means is that the microflora in your gut is a powerful and compelling force in your body, one that may influence far more than how well your food gets digested. This living inner ecosystem is becoming a favorite topic among scientists and nutritionists alike, and you may be wise to listen to what the newest research is revealing.

How to Become and Stay Well Plus Be Happy by Paying Attention to “5 Wellness Clues”

A patient says to his doctor, “Doc, when I twist my head hard to the right, I get a sharp pain in the neck.” To which the doctor replies, “Then don’t twist your head hard to the right!”

You’ve likely heard this joke, or a variation, before, but it bears repeating because it is SO true! When you learn to pay attention to your body’s signals, you will find it lets you know when you are making positive or negative choices for your health and well-being.

Ultimately, by listening to your body and leading a healthy lifestyle, you can avoid much of the “sick care” system that will try to solve your solution with medications and surgeries. Often, these sick-care “solutions” will lead to side effects that require even more treatments because they are not addressing the underlying causes of your problems.

What I Am Doing This Week–Yoga and More!

I attended a 10 hour intensive Yoga Course this past weekend in LA- all day this past Saturday! I’ve been taking courses like this for the last 40 years, and have grown tremendously from this practice. I am so glad to see yoga getting popularized for all to benefit from.

This past week, Lift Brands, the parent Company to Snap Fitness, announced it was partnering with the largest yoga training program in the world to offer a 24/7-year-old franchise concept called YogaFit Studios.

Peter Taunton, the founder of Lift Brands and CEO stated “Our goal is to open 1000 domestic studios over the next five years‚Ķ We are confident yoga is here to stay and we are targeting aggressive expansion.”

It is now estimated that 20 million Americans practice yoga and spent nearly $6 billion annually in classes, yoga equipment and DVDs and more.

Mr Taunton is offering YogaFit franchises to yoga instructors who want to start their own center. You can learn more about this HERE.

Right on the heels of this exciting announcement is a new study that shows that yoga reduces fatigue and inflammation for breast cancer patients. This study was published in the very prestigious Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Those breast cancer patients who practiced yoga reported about 50% less fatigue than those in the control group and had 20% lower levels of three proteins in the blood that are markers for inflammation. These proteins that are generated by the immune system are known to cause fatigue, headaches and general malaise when we develop an infection.

It was also found that the more times a woman practiced yoga each week, the lower the levels of her tiredness and inflammation. In addition these benefits persisted for three months after the study ended. This is indeed exciting information.

In addition, excessive inflammation is also linked to a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and most of the chronic diseases that we have in our world today. This includes diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. All of these diseases will probably benefit from yoga !

You can read more about it here.

It is wonderfully exciting to me to see this most powerful tool for self centering and consciousness expansion -yoga-being offered on such a widescale to our entire country. Are you taking or teaching yoga classes yet?

A New Movie

Along with the consciousness expansion that yoga offers us, I am delighted to announce a new movie that was just released this past weekend called Fed Up.

This movie expands our consciousness in a different way than yoga does. It shows us what is going on in the food industry and how we’ve all been seduced into eating junk food. This movie is stated to “reveal a 30 year campaign by the food industry, aided by the US government, to mislead and confuse the American public, resulting in one of the largest health epidemics in history.

Katie Kouric stars in the film which is produced by Laurie David and directed by Stephaine Soechtig.

Check your local listings closely. In Los Angeles the movie is showing in only one theater on the west side of LA.

Here is the preview for your review.

In addition I strongly urge you watch this other video on Sugar: The Bitter Truth:

Please watch your children’s diets and educate them to eat healthy to avoid the epidemic of bad health that is expected to occur in our children and grandchildren.

How to Keep Your Kid’s Mind Active This Summer… and Why You Should

Summer vacation — a little over two months of free time and fun for your kids — but that doesn’t mean they should lose everything they learned over the school year.

The long, lazy days of summer pose a risk for school-aged children and it’s even been coined as “summer brain drain.” Research has shown that if your child’s brain remains stagnant without challenge over the summer months, they could lose, on average, 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in math skills and nearly a whole reading level.

Other studies have shown that on the average students will score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation compared to the same tests they took at the beginning of the summer.

Like Mother, Like Daughter” … Is the Phrase Really True? Are You Destined to be Like Your Mother?

Mother’s Day just around the corner, this is a great time to reflect for many on the importance and relationship we have had with our Mothers. Few lifelong relationships can compare to the complex range of emotions shared between mothers and daughters. And whether you’d describe your relationship as “best friends,” “mortal enemies” or somewhere in between, most daughters reach a point in their life when they stop and think, “I sound just like my mother.”

This may be music to your ears or, perhaps, it may make you cringe a little and remember how you swore you would never be that way. Yet, for many women, the imprint of their mother is an important, and inescapable, part of who they are.

How to Heal Surgical and Other Wounds Fast with Less Scarring

Wounds, whether due to injury or surgery, can exact a great toll on your quality of life if they do not heal quickly and completely. And, whether you realize it or not, there’s a lot more to wound healing than Band-Aids and antibiotic ointment. In fact, to really understand the mechanisms behind how to best heal your wounds, it helps to first know a bit about how the process works at a biological level.

The Three Phases of Wound Healing

Anytime you have an injury to the skin it triggers a complex series of events at the cellular level. This prompts the three stages that will help your wound to heal properly:

Phase 1: Inflammatory

The inflammatory process begins in response to injury, and first involves forming a clot to stop bleeding (hemostasis). Then antibodies and white blood cells get to work fighting off bacteria and collagen formation begins. This phase begins when the wound is created and lasts two to four days.

Global Warming!

“The biggest story of our time”–James Cameron, director

global warming

For years many people and many scientists have been saying there is no such thing as global warming and it will have no effect on human life. Now, finally, it is becoming obvious. I am seeing so many patients with allergies and autoimmune diseases, and chronic unwelless, and these conditions are clearly connected with global warming and the concomitant epidemic of environmental contamination. The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has recently written about the relation between global warming and allergies. Also,TV news is talking about it. Increasingly, we see article after article talking about the relation between environmental toxicity (which is exacerbated by global warming) and the chronic degenerative diseases that we are seeing more and more of. Articles about environmental toxicity and Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease are appearing more frequently. The United States government and the governments of the world talk about making it better, but we see very little actually getting done.

James Cameron
I’m now delighted to announce to you that executive producers James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have combined an all-star cast to bring this to the awareness of all the people. A new series on Showtime called Years of Living Dangerously has begun to air.  The producers have enlisted the help of many famous actors including Harrison Ford and Matt Damon to travel the world learning about this issue and sharing their thoughts.. I am happy to show you a preview of this wonderful new series right here in my blog.
Here is Harrison Ford getting an introduction form a very famous teacher on the science of how and why global warming is happening.
And here is an excellent video of Amy Goodman on Democracy Now talking about the show and interviewing the producer.
Be sure to watch the first episode for free on the Showtime website, or YouTube, and you can use your DVR to record the rest at home. The bottom line is that we ALL must now pay attention to the issue of global warming and participate in the efforts to reverse it–if not for our own sake, then for the sake of our children and our grandchildren who will inherit the world we leave them

Sea Vegetables: Why You Should Eat More of This Delicious Asian Superfood

seaweedSea vegetables, better known as seaweed, are the leafy greens of the sea. Though not technically a vegetable (they’re actually classified as algae), seaweed is loaded with nutrition and has a unique, slightly salty flavor that’s been a staple in Japanese cuisine for more than 10,000 years!
In ancient China, meanwhile, sea vegetables were a delicacy reserved for honored guests and royalty. In fact, numerous cultures that live near their coasts have been enjoying sea vegetables for quite some time. This includes not only parts of Asia but also Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, coastal South America, Scotland, Ireland, and the Pacific Islands.

Here’s a breakdown of what to keep an eye out for.

Epigenetics and Healthy Choices: How Your Environment and Personal Choices Can Affect Your Development, Health and Even Your Genetic Makeup

It’s fair to say that the average American, at one point and time in their life, has wished that they could change something about themselves. Whether it’s a smaller nose, better logic, or more mathematical skills, many of us wish for better genetic traits because we know that we can’t control our inheritances – or, in simpler terms, we can’t change what our parents gave us.
Or Can We?

For years studies have found evidence proving that our genes can actually change through experiences and lifestyle choices.

Philip Hunter, a science writer specializing in biology, explains this phenomenon, known as epigenetics, in his paper “What Genes Remember”:

“It has long been known that an organism’s fate is not determined by genes alone. This much we can tell by observing identical twins, who over time tend to diverge both physiologically (developing differences in, say, height and posture) and psychologically (exhibiting different personality traits and even, sometimes, sexual orientations). Despite most identical twins having similar diets and lifestyles, subtle cultural and environmental distinctions appear to alter their phenotype—the sum of their nature and nurture.”
