Do You Know About Uber?

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Even though my newsletter is mostly about health and wellness, from time to time I find things which I want to share with my patients which I think are very helpful. One of my young patients introduced me to this!

If you don’t already know about it, there is a great service in Los Angeles and many other major cities called Uber. Uber is a car service that directly integrates with your smart phone. There are apps for both iPhone and android phones now. Uber has cars all over the city and you order one right from your cell phone. The car usually picks you up within 5 to 6 minutes. Prices are significantly cheaper than a taxicab.

You can pick one of three levels of car:

1. A black limo type car.

2. A Prius type of car which is less expensive.

3. An SUV.

You register yourself with your credit card and they do not require tips. The driver will pick you up, take you to your destination, and you get out of the car! It’s all done automatically through your smart phone and your credit card.

You can find out more about it HERE. If you use that link, they will apply a $10 credit to your new account!  Who knows? You might want to take an Uber car to your next office visit.

In What Ways is a Bigger Home “Worth It”? In What Ways isn’t It?

large houses

Since 1950, the average house in the United States has more than doubled in size to reach an average of 2,349 square feet. No longer — if they can help it — will families share a bathroom as they often did in the ’50s, nor will three or four kids share a bedroom.

Americans buy big homes for many different reasons. For space, for status, for tax breaks, for the neighborhood (and schools), and for a feeling of security. But is a bigger home really a better investment than a medium size or smaller one?

A big home will generally appreciate in value, which means that whenever you decide to sell, you stand to reap a profit, but there are many other things to consider.

I look forward to your comments about the uniting of these two stores!

I expect the two shops will be integrated sometime in the next 1-2 months.

Rhubarb: Delicious, Nutritious … and for More Than Just Pie!

7685947-1--thb (1)

Most people only think about rhubarb in terms of pies, crisps or crumbles, but there is much more to rhubarb than dessert.

This hardy, sour plant (rhubarb isn’t exactly a fruit or a vegetable — it’s the stem of a perennial plant) originated in Eastern Europe where it was enjoyed by the Germanics and has been used for medicinal purposes by the Chinese since 2700 B.C., according to the Washington Rhubarb Growers Association.

Rhubarb, which once grew along the banks of the ancient Volga River, literally means “barbarians of the Volga River,” and is also another word for a serious disagreement.

But there’s no need to fret over this unique edible plant … it’s healthy, tasty and incredibly easy to cook with (and grow!).

Lupus and Vitamin D

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMugA large longitudinal study has found that patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who had low levels of vitamin D and then received vitamin D supplementation, reduce the likelihood of having high disease activity.

Specifically in this article they looked at Lupus patients with vitamin D levels below 40 ng/mL. They they gave them an appropriate dose of vitamin D to boost their levels by 20 ng/mL.

Excitingly this increase in vitamin D was associated with a decline in the physicians’ assessment of disease activity in the patients to a significant extent.

The lupus patients whose vitamin D was increased in the study also had an improvement in their kidney function specifically the reduction in the protein in their urine. The article rightfully points out that this not only improves the patient’s prognosis, but also reduces the direct costs of healthcare and lost productivity that can be associated with patients with lupus with kidney involvement.

For the last 10 years I’ve been optimizing my lupus patients (all my patients) vitamin D levels. It is so exciting to see more and more studies coming out now, especially prospective ones as were promised years ago, proving the benefit of vitamin D. Vitamin D is truly mother nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory. I wish everybody was aware of this!

14 Things to do if You Feel Tired and Sore After Working Out

post-workout fatigue

You’ve pushed yourself to the limit — jogging, lifting, dancing or whatever it is you do to exercise — and have no sooner wiped the sweat from your brow when it hits you: sore muscles and fatigue … the variety that make you wonder, “Why am I doing this to myself?!”

What causes sore muscles and fatigue after a workout? Many things, but often it occurs because you’ve exerted yourself and your body needs time to adjust.

To be fair, muscles soreness often doesn’t occur for 12 to 36 hours after a workout. This type of soreness, called delayed-onset muscles soreness (DOMS), is more likely to happen when you’ve just intensified your workout or started a new activity. It’s caused either by a buildup of energy waste products in the muscles or microscopic tears in muscle fibers.

With DOMS, you may think you’re out of the woods, and then be hit with muscles soreness, stiffness, weakness and fatigue.

Vitamin D In the News Again

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Vitamin D is in the news again as a benefit in diverse diseases.

Breast Cancer

New research shows that vitamin D and high dose may be a useful treatment in young women with an abnormality in the BRCA1 gene, who have the deadly triple negative breast cancer. So-called triple negative, (because it is missing three hormone receptors) breast cancer is considered a very aggressive type of cancer that often occurs in young women. In this new research which you can read about HERE, researchers have found the vitamin D in sufficient dose may significantly improve the prognosis of women with this very serious cancer.

BRCA1 is an important tumor suppressor gene that is involved in repairing DNA breaks, which is a danger to the integretity of the DNA itself. BRCA1 is like a safeguard to the genes. With a BRCA1 Mutation, that is a loss of BRCA1 itself which results in gene instability with unreparied DNA breaks and chromosome abnormalities that compromises the cell’s life.

You can read the details in the articles below if you’re interested. But basically what the vitamin D is found to do, is to increase the level of another DNA factor called 53BP1, which is like a cofactor to BRCA1. The increased level of the 53BP1 results in an increased ability of the cell to stabilize its DNA which is otherwise broken down by in the absence of  BRCA1.

So the big implication here is that vitamin D may be very helpful in this aggressive type of breast cancer.

As all my patients and readers know I’m a big proponent of giving sufficient doses of vitamin D to all patients who have had breast cancer. This article is exciting because it is now beginning to show the underlying biochemistry of what epidemiologic articles have told us for many many years.

In addition, equally important is preventing breast cancer. Nine of the world’s leading researchers published an article in 2007 showing that if women would keep their Vitamin D blood test at 52 ng/ml, epidemiological data says we would cut the incidence of breast cancer by 50%. Since that level is not harmful to anybody, what is wrong with keeping our levels of vitamin D in that range, until MORE data comes in?

Seven Ways to Prevent Injuries to Your Eyes

prevent eye injuries

Over 1 million Americans suffer from eye injuries each year, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and 90 percent of them could be prevented by taking the appropriate safety precautions.

We do come equipped with a bit of protection in the form of eyelids, eyelashes, tears and a bony facial structure, but when it comes to flying debris, chemicals, ultraviolet light, sports and more, these protections simply aren’t enough.

What are the most common causes of eye injuries?

The Little-Known Dangers of Antibiotics… Is Antibiotic Overuse Driving Them to Extinction?

The era of antibiotics, where deadly bacterial infections are knocked out completely in a matter of days, may be coming to an end soon, according to more than a handful of media headlines referring to a new paper in the Lancet Infectious Diseases medical journal. However, all hope is not lost.

Walsh told The Guardian:The paper, by Professor Tim Walsh and colleagues, refers to a type of gene called NDM 1, which easily transfers between enterobacteriaceae bacteria (which includes E. coli and other types), making such bacteria resistant to antibiotics. NDM 1 is already widespread in other areas of the world, such as India, but it’s now showing up in the United States as well.

“In many ways, this is it … This is potentially the end. There are no antibiotics in the pipeline that have activity against NDM 1-producing enterobacteriaceae. We have a bleak window of maybe 10 years, where we are going to have to use the antibiotics we have very wisely, but also grapple with the reality that we have nothing to treat these infections with.”

Eating Raw: The Advantages and Disadvantages According to Various Experts

eating raw food

A raw food movement has sweept across North America, advocating a diet of anywhere from 70 percent to 100 percent raw foods.

Raw foodists claim that switching to a predominantly raw food diet will give you more energy, slow down aging, improve your skin, boost your mood, and fight a host of chronic diseases including chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn’s disease and even cancer.

A true raw food diet consists of only raw foods, traditionally vegan ones like vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. However, some raw foodists also eat raw dairy products, raw eggs and even raw meat.

“When you cook something, you destroy the enzymes,” said Karyn Calabrese, a well-known raw foodist in the Chicago-area in an NBC5 article. “You need enzymes for every metabolic purpose in your body. When you lose enzymes, that’s when you die.”
