What I Am Doing

This past weekend I attended my dear friend and patient Daniel Leighton’s exhibit of his new artwork showing the history of his journey with Crohn’s disease.

In the picture below you see David and me with one of his pieces of art depicting the surgery he had to remove his colon. You see the incision down his main abdomen, and behind it is his heart opening. He wears a mask as he does not want to be seen for who he is yet.

Daniel gave a beautiful description of his journey from childhood until present. He thanked me in his speech for the help that I gave him using integrative medicine. You can see from this photo he looks very healthy and hardy now!

What may come as a surprise to you is that all his art at the exhibit was done on his iPad! In his talk to the audience he explained how the iPad was a perfect canvas to do his work because it gives him so many brushes and colors! This type of art will become the future, I’m quite sure.

Please visit his website to see more of his art, much of which depicts the journey he has taken to come physically emotionally and spiritually into more wholeness.

Warning: Your Soft Drinks and Favorite Snacks May be Loaded With Toxic Mercury

high fructose corn syrupHigh-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has replaced sugar in many processed foods, and is now found in soft drinks and other sweetened beverages, breads, cereals, lunch meats, soup, condiments, yogurt and much, much more.
The sweetener, which has been linked to everything from obesity and accelerated bone loss to increased levels of triglycerides, has gotten bad press before, but perhaps none as alarming as that from two new studies.

After testing samples of commercial HFCS, researchers found nearly half of the samples contained mercury.

The first study, published in Environmental Health, found mercury in nine out of 20 samples of commercial HFCS. The second study, conducted by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), a non-profit watchdog group, detected mercury in nearly one-third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or second highest labeled

Ingredient — including products by Quaker, Hershey’s, Kraft and Smucker’s.

Mercury was most prevalent in HFCS-containing dairy products, followed by dressings and condiments, according to the IATP study.

The Upcoming Gluten Summit

I’m excited and delighted to announce to my patients and readers the upcoming FREE online worldwide symposium on gluten from November 11–17, 2013.

You can register for this free seminar by clicking this link. Each day during that week four or five interviews will be available to listen to during each 24 hour period. For those of you who will want to listen to the interviews on your smart phones, there will be the option to purchase the downloads. But, that it not at all expected if you just want to listen online.

I am seeing what could be called “miracles” in my practice by discovering a patient has gluten sensitivity and taking them off gluten. My most recent “miracle” occurred when I found gluten sensitivity in a 35-year-old woman with Multiple Sclerosis, who has had blurred vision for six months. This is after seeing many neurologists. Two weeks after taking her off gluten, her blurred vision disappeared and has remained gone.

During the upcoming summit, Dr. Tom O’Bryan, who is the gluten expert that I interviewed on one of my podcasts, will be interviewing some of the most famous gluten researchers in the world.

This FREE seminar series will be great for some of your friends who may be skeptical of the importance of gluten sensitivity by calling it a “fad” diet. During the conference you will learn the science behind all the information showing the gluten can be a problem for many people.

Some of the doctors who will be interviewed include
William Davis, M.D.
David Perlmutter, M.D.
Alessio Fasano, M.D.
Umberto Volta, M.D.
and Michael Marsh, M.D., the doctors who have brought to our attention the importance of recognizing gluten sensitivity.

Triple

I urge all my patients and readers who have any interest whatsoever in gluten sensitivity to tune into at least part of this summit. All aspects of Gluten sensitivity will be discussed!

Full information and Registration can be done at this site.

I look forward to being in dialogue with you about gluten and our health.

Sprouts: Why They are Among the Healthiest Foods You Can Eat … and 15 Interesting Varieties

sproutsSprouts are tiny, baby plants that are just beginning their journey into the familiar veggies we know. Yet, at this stage the sprout is packed with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and more, which it will need to grow into a mature plant.

Eating sprouts, therefore, is said to be among the healthiest ways to consume your vegetables, because you get higher concentrations of nutrients, and, because the sprout is still alive and growing when it’s consumed, it is a raw food, full of live nutrition (which cooked vegetables do not provide).

“Sprouts are the elixir of life,” says Angela Elliott, a practitioner in holistic modalities and author of Alive in 5: Raw Gourmet Meals in Five Minutes.

Of note, while a head of broccoli from the supermarket will degrade in nutritional quality the longer it sits in your fridge, broccoli sprouts will continue to grow and gain nutrients, within reason, until you eat them. Further, gram for gram, broccoli sprouts have more nutrients than mature broccoli, so eating a small amount of sprouts may actually be better for you than eating a large amount of mature broccoli.

Toddler Safety: Eight Important but Overlooked Ways to Keep a Baby Safe in Your Home

toddler safetyAccidents are the leading cause of death among toddlers, so keeping your home baby-proof is an essential part of being a parent, grandparent or anyone who has babies and toddlers who visit their home.

While most people are aware of the major risks, such as keeping toxic chemicals and medicines out of the reach of children, there are many other, less known ways that children can get hurt.

If children are ever in your home, here are the top things you can do to make sure that they stay out of harm’s way.

5 Behaviors That Promote Healthy Living Past Age 90

aging wellWhat does it take to live to be 100, or even 91? Ask a handful of centenarians, and you’re likely to get a handful of different answers.
“Keep a smile on your face,” “No tobacco,” “Treat others how you want to be treated,” and “Drink a warm beer before bed,” are all words of longevity from people who have passed the 100-year point.

In fact, this exclusive group of people who are over 100 are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, their numbers at 40,000 and growing strong.

If you would like to someday join those who are 100+, it turns out that there may be more to it than just luck. A new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine has uncovered five keys that can, in fact, help you to live longer.

The study involved more than 2,300 men whose average age at the beginning of the study (in 1981) was 72. The men answered yearly questionnaires about their health and lifestyle, and were tested for mental and physical functioning. In 2008, 970 of the men made it into their 90s.

It turns out that there were five factors that helped them to not only live longer, but also to be healthy and well-functioning in their older years.

Environmental Toxicity and Pregnancy

Cheerful beautiful pregnant woman sitting on the sofa with a bowl full of vegetables.

“Reducing exposure to toxic environmental agents is a critical area of intervention for obstetricians, gynecologists, and other reproductive health care professionals. Patient exposure to toxic environmental chemicals and other stressors is ubiquitous, and preconception and prenatal exposure to toxic environmental agents can have a profound and lasting effect on reproductive health across the life course.”

I would have thought the above quote came from a textbook of environmental medicine designed for Integrative Doctors. It is the basic underpinning philosophy of my Preconception Pregnancy Planning Program, and that of the detoxification protocols that many Integrative Doctors do in their practice daily.

And yet the above quote is from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), as well as the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Practice Committee! What took them so long?

In the article, they say that the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2003 to 2004 found that virtually every pregnant woman in the United States is exposed to at least 43 different chemicals.

They are finally pointing out that these chemicals in pregnant women cross the placenta and accumulate in the fetus. They give the example of methylmercury (as found in fish) actually being concentrated with a higher amount in the fetus than in the mother.

They go on to remind us that such prenatal exposure to pesticides has been shown to increase the risk of cancer in childhood, and that adult male exposure to pesticides is linked to altered semen quality, sterility, and prostate cancer. And they point out that postnatal exposure to pesticides can interfere with all developmental stages of reproductive function in adult females, including puberty menstruation and ovulation, fertility and fecundity, and menopause.

Combine this with the recent evidence connecting these chemicals with Breast Cancer and maybe we can begin to understand the epidemic of young women with breast cancer.

ADHD symbol conceptua;l design isolated on white background. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symbol conceptual design

The ACOG article blatantly neglects to mention the role of these environmental toxins on the children’s nervous system, and the role it may be playing in the epidemic we have of Autism Spectrum Disorders, as well as Attention Deficit Disorder.

In the article, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine “join numerous other health professional organizations in calling for timely action to identify and reduce exposure to toxic environmental agents while addressing the consequences of such exposure.”

I am pleased to see that they point out that Reproductive Care Professionals should counsel their patients to avoid harmful environmental exposure, but how long will this take to bring into regular practice?

The Endocrine Society in 2009 called for improved public policy to identify and regulate endocrine disrupting chemicals and recommended that “until such time as conclusive scientific evidence exists to either prove or disprove harmful effects of substances, a precautionary approach should be taken in the formulation of Endocrine Disrupting chemical policy”

The article wisely encourages professionals who are caring for pregnant women and newborns to counsel their patients to avoid pesticides in the food they eat.

In addition they advise avoiding canned food and other dietary sources of bisphenol A. Studies have shown that such efforts can significantly reduce body burdens of toxic chemicals.

In addition they go on to say that the clinician should encourage women who are pregnant or lactating to eat fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes and whole grains every day, and to avoid fast food and other processed foods whenever possible. In addition they advise limiting foods high in animal fat. Sounds close to a Vegan diet!

I know that you, my patients and readers understand how delighted I am to see this coming out from such an official organization as the ACOG. It certainly puts wind in the sails of my and my Integrative Colleagues Preconception Pregnancy Planning Program.

My further comments on the information in this article are:

1.This article talks about reducing solvent, pesticide heavy-metal exposure during pregnancy. How about cleaning it out before? We now have the technology to measure a woman’s levels of solvents, pesticides and heavy metals and a way to medically detoxify them out before she conceives.

I am doing this work in my office, and the patients and I are gratified in the before and after measurements showing the effectiveness of the program.

It is very important before pregnancy to clean out as much of the solvents, pesticides, heavy metals in a woman. This is because during pregnancy, these toxins exit the mother’s organs and fat and are poured into the fetus.

2.It was surprising to me that the article only mentions that 43 chemicals are going into the fetus. We know from the seminal study done by the Environmental Working Group in 2005, that 287 chemicals are detected in umbilical cord blood at birth.

3. The article overlooks, as I mentioned above, the important fact that toxins stored in the mother’s fat and organs come out of the organs, during pregnancy, and go into the fetus. They are unaware that through Naturopathic Medicine techniques, we are able to detoxify most of these chemicals out of the mother’s body before she conceives.

Doing such detoxification of a woman before she conceives, require several months of detoxification. This can lead to some expense. For that reason, some women are reluctant to embark on such a program.

Unfortunately, these women are not realizing the costs of having a child with a neurological deficit. The organization, Autism Speaks estimates the cost of caring for an autistic person over his or her life is $2.3 million. Each person must decide what is best for them and their family.

Please give me your thoughts on all this information! My patients can tell me directly when they see me. My readers can leave me a comment on my blog, or Facebook page.

LASIK Surgery: What are the Risks vs. the Benefits?

wearing contact lensesEvery year, 1.3 million Americans undergo LASIK surgery to correct their vision, and most have good results. In fact, only 2 percent to 3 percent of LASIK (which stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) patients have complications, according to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

But while the opportunity to see clearly without glasses or contacts is a tempting one, is it worth the potential risks that do exist? This is the question that everyone considering LASIK surgery must face.

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK surgery permanently changes the shape of your cornea, which is the clear covering in front of your eye. The surgery works like this:

  • A special knife is used to cut a flap in your cornea, which is folded back to reveal the middlesection, or stroma, of the cornea.
  • Pulses from a laser are used to vaporize a portion of the stroma.
  • The flap is replaced.

Can Copper Wreak Havoc on Your Body? Studies Reveal How Copper Imbalances Cause Mood Disorders, ADHD, Anger Problems and More

It’s no secret that America is renowned for being the pill-popping “Prozac Nation” trying to medicate its problems with a host of ‘miracle drugs’ that constitute a billion-dollar industry.

But you may be surprised to learn mood disorders — in addition to a host of other disorders, like anxiety disorders, behavioral disorders, ADHD and more — are not always caused by the common environmental or mental issues that doctors so commonly associate them with. In fact, new reports find that many of these emotional or behavioral problems are largely due to varying imbalances in our bodies.
You might be familiar with a large collection of daily ‘essential nutrients’ that are listed on your everyday food labels. Among the common nutrients are elements like calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc and iron. What you may not know, however, is that there is another essential mineral your body needs, and you almost never see it listed along with those other nutrients.

That mineral is copper.

Copper plays an integral role in ensuring the mental, physical and chemical wellbeing of your body and, along with all the other essential minerals and nutrients, is vital for survival. In addition to helping you live a healthy life, new studies have found it also plays an integral role in balancing your mood levels, in addition to being a huge factor in affecting learning disorders (specifically ADHD) and more.

To truly understand the essential role of this metal and its effects on your body, it is important to delve into its biological roles.

The Top Four Causes of Accidental Death After Auto Accidents

prescription drugsEvery five minutes, someone in the United States is killed by an accident, according to new research from The National Safety Council (NSC). Overall, accidents are the fifth leading cause of death, behind only heart disease, cancer, stroke and chronic lower respiratory diseases.
Yet, for people between the ages of 1 and 41, accidental deaths are the leading cause of death in the nation, and they’re increasing at a greater rate than any of the other top causes of death.

In just one 10-year period, accidental deaths increased over 20 percent, to more than 113,000 deaths, NSC found. At this rate, the all-time record for accidental deaths, set in 1969 with 116,385, will be surpassed within a few years.

“Accidental death in America is a silent epidemic. With one person dying from an accident every five minutes, unintentional injury is one of the most serious public health issues facing the country,” said NSC President and CEO Alan McMillan.
