Chronic Low Level Toxic Exposures Increasingly Linked to Neurological Problems in Later Life

For years, physicians who practice environmental medicine, including myself, have been advising their patients to avoid toxicants that can produce problems with our neuralogical, endocrine and immune systems later in life.

In my own practice, many patients have taken my words to heart, and let me guide them on a detoxification program to chelate heavy metals and to remove solvents and pesticides. Many of my patients have told me they feel significantly better after they complete this program. Often they will report better cognition when we have finished.

However, the majority of physicians do not pay attention to this and do not encourage their patients to pay attention to this.

Now just in the last 10 days, I am delighted to see several articles all confirming what I have been telling my patients and readers for many years.

The three organ systems that heavy metals, solvents and pesticides , affect are the neurological system, the immune system, and the endocrine system system.

A new article from the prestigious Environmental Health Perspectives, a United States governmental publication, has just come out entitled Time after Time: Environmental Influences on the Aging Brain.

Here are some important quotes from that article:

“The population of Americans aged 65 and older is expected to double between 2010 and 2050, and by midcentury the proportion of the human population made up of people over age 80 is projected to have quadrupled since 2000. So factors that affect this aging population are of increasing importance. Of particular concern are the neurological diseases and disorders typically associated with advanced age, among them Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, dementia, and reduced cognitive function. Investigators are studying the effects of not just present-day exposures and environmental influences such as physical and mental exercise, but also exposures that occurred much earlier in life, whose effects may only become apparent in old age.”

Please note this includes exposures in the womb and in childhood.

“Now, however, there is increasing evidence that the brain is capable of generating new neurons and other functional brain cells even during advanced age. There is also evidence that the older brain can respond quickly and positively to external influences such as physical exercise and intellectual stimulation. This is prompting considerable interest in developing strategies for protecting and enhancing neurological function in the elderly.”

Lead has particularly been studied for its known ability to damage neurological tissue:

One study assessed 466 elderly participants in the VA Normative Aging Study who were environmentally but not occupationally exposed to lead. The study showed that higher bone lead levels were associated with steeper declines in these men’s cognitive skills over several years of followup, even after adjusting for confounding factors. Other work assessed the impacts of low-level lead exposure combined with self-reported chronic stress in 811 older men participating in the same study. It, too, found these exposures to be associated with impaired cognitive ability.”

“Lead and mercury have been associated with liver disease, which itself is associated with adverse neurological health effects, including a condition that produces a type of neuronal plaque associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Chemical exposures that adversely affect kidney and liver function can also hamper the body’s ability to detoxify and excrete environmental toxicants, thus letting them remain in the body—an effect that may be particularly problematic in advanced age when a body’s defense mechanisms are in decline.”

This is one reason I advise my patients to stop eating mercury-laden fish. In addition, many of my patients are getting chronic low lead exposure, due to dishes and drinking glasses that they have bought at common retail outlets. Many of these dishes are made in China where lead is everywhere.

I would advise all my patients and readers to ask their doctor at their next physical exam to get a blood lead and blood mercury level to make sure that they are not in the toxic zone of these harmful heavy metals.

Solvents too are a problem. To quote further:

“More substantial evidence links various solvent exposures to other neurological conditions, including cognitive impairments, neuropathy, and what is sometimes called “pseudodementia,” when temporary neurological dysfunction produces symptoms similar to those of dementia. Organic solvents, including toluene, have also been found to impair color vision, while other solvent exposures have been linked to hearing loss, particularly when combined with noise exposure. Such exposures have been primarily studied when they occur occupationally, but some epidemiological studies suggest there is also potential for adverse effects from ambient environmental exposures.”

I am also delighted to see that this article brings up the role of gonadal hormones in maintaining neural cognition. I have seen this in my practice in many women who choose at menopause not to start on estrogen. I am glad to see that more research will be done on this subject.

Here is what they said:

“Weiss says gonadal hormones (i.e., androgens and estrogens) also deserve far more research attention for their influence on neurological function in the elderly.29 These hormones determine sexual differentiation, but they also are involved in neurogenesis and have demonstrated neuroprotective effects in adult male and female animals.”

The good news about this article is that it ends with looking at protective factors for our precious brains. Increasingly, physical exercise is being found to offer significant protection for the aging brain. Here is what they say:

“Some studies have reported a doubled or even tripled ability of the dentate gyrus to generate new neurons in rodents that exercised. Growth of new dendritic spines, which are important for learning and memory, appears to be stimulated as physical or aerobic exercise increases the expression of genes associated with regulating the secretion of neurotrophin proteins, particularly brain-derived neurotrophic factor, says Kirk Erickson, principal investigator of the University of Pittsburgh Brain Aging and Cognitive Health Laboratory. One hypothesis for this, he explains, is that because exercise stimulates blood flow, it may also increase available levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor”

“In experiments with mice, aerobic exercise has been associated with improved spatial memory.38,40 Such activity has also been associated with increased hippocampus size, Erickson explained in a talk at the 2014 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,42 and “no pharmaceutical treatment has been able to replicate this effect.” According to Kramer and Erickson, findings from human studies that examined the effects of brisk walking and other aerobic activity have been consistent with those in animal studies.”

In Other New Environmental News

In other news, just released this past Sunday, September 21, 2014, a new study from Duke University has shown that flame retardants in furniture pose significant danger. They were looking for exposure in children who were bornt to mothers who were exposed to it during pregnancy. This is what they found:

“A study by Duke University and the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Working Group found evidence of exposure to a potentially harmful fire retardant in the urine samples of all 22 mothers and 26 children tested. On average, the children had nearly five times more than their mothers of a chemical formed when the fire retardant, TDCPP, breaks down in the body.

TDCPP – a primary focus among the chemicals studied – is often present in the foam used to make sofas, pillows, mattresses and carpet padding, among other household items. California has declared TDCPP a cancer-causing agent and includes warnings on all products using it and selected other chemicals. The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists TDCPP as a probable human carcinogen.

“The general population of the U.S. has constant, chronic exposure to these chemicals,” said Heather Stapleton, assistant professor of environmental chemistry at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment. “In some homes, it’s a much higher concentration than in other homes” – depending on myriad factors including the house’s size and ventilation rates, where the furniture was bought and what kind it is, and the type of home insulation.”

In yet another article just released, the EPA is proposing changing standards for pesticide exposure to farmworkers. This is an effort to give more protection to the workers exposed. But what about us, the consumer who constantly gets exposed to this low-level pesticides on a daily basis? That builds up to create what we call a body burden, which then affects our long-term health.

I am very pleased to see that the EPA is stepping in to change the standards at least for farmworkers.

It is very exciting that this new information is showing that aerobic exercise can bring benefits to our brains. That combined with avoidance of exposure to solvents pesticides and heavy metals, can go a long way towards helping us to stay neurologically healthy.

Should You be Worried About Chinese drywall? What it is, and Why Thousands of Homeowners’ Health May be at Risk

Contaminated drywall from China, used to build more than 60,000 homes in at least a dozen states, may be emitting toxic levels of chemical pollutants like sulfur into new homes.

More than 500 million pounds of potentially tainted Chinese building materials may have been imported into the United States, particularly to Florida, at the height of the housing boom, according to shipping records reviewed by The Associated Press (AP).

The drywall lets off fumes that smell like rotten eggs and are potent enough to corrode copper pipes and make jewelry and silverware turn black. In fact, one of the telltale signs that a home may contain Chinese drywall is corroded piping and wiring that causes electronics and appliances, including air conditioners, to fail.

Baxter the Robot- Will he take your job?

My article this week is not strictly medical. However, it is on a subject that is very important to all of us.

Even though we are all unique and special in our own ways, the robots are coming! The question is, will they steal our jobs?

With the technological developments of the last many years, computers have taken over many jobs already. Newspapers are mostly online now. Parking garages have machines that give you your ticket and take the money to pay for the ticket on your way out. Who makes typewriters now?

Audi has just been given the first permit to begin testing a driverless car.

I believe we should all be in dialogue about this subject now, before it becomes too late. There is a new phenomenon called technological unemployment that is pervading modern society.

A recently published book called *Robots will Steal Your Job, But That’s Ok*, by Frederico Pistono, looks at this subject and asks if this is really the case? Or is it just a fantasy? He discusses what will become of us in the coming years and what can we do to prevent catastrophic collapse of society, caused by this evolutionary change in the world.

In the book, he explores the impact of technological advances on our lives, and most importantly what it means to be happy, and provide suggestions for preventing trouble in the future.

What got me interested in the subject, is a webpage I accidentally landed on, when browsing the web! It contained a 15 minute video – which never lost my interest – on just what robots are capable of. I was quite surprised, by what is happening in our world with technology and robots.

I urge you to watch this video so that we may be in dialogue on the planet on how to sustain jobs for our future generations.

“Humans Need Not Apply”

The things in this video are already starting to become a reality. As I mentioned, Audi is already cleared to test a car that will drive without a driver. Hopefully, these changes will occur incrementally as robots and computers take away segments of the job market.

I am coming to find that several other books have been written on this subject already, over the last couple years. I list them below.

Please drop me a note on Twitter or Facebook, and let me know what you think about this subject? Have robots affected your life yet? Have they affected a member of your family’s life yet? Do you know anybody who lost their job to to a robot or computer?

I hope to hear from you.

Dr Soram Chosen One of the Best Doctors in LA!

I am very honored to tell my patients and my readers that I have been chosen one of the best doctors in Los Angeles. The world-famous Hollywood Reporter magazine did a very scientifically run poll to pick the best doctors of Los Angeles.

They partnered with the physician led research team of Castle Connolly, which is the United States’ preeminent medical database authority. “They then surveyed 800 professionals in the film, television, movie and media fields to find out who among these doctors are the most beloved, trusted and go to physicians in Los Angeles.”

I was called by phone out of a busy day with patients, by the producer of the article to tell me that I had received amongst the highest votes of all those that they polled. They told me that they wanted to feature me with a picture with one of my famous patients. I was so honored that Morgan agreed to be photographed with me for this great award.

Here is the short bio of me, that was written about me from the interview:

“Because his new patients don’t always understand what integrative medicine is, Dr. Soram Khalsa encourages them to view a video.

In it, the 66-year-old turbaned and bewhiskered internist — he adopted Sikhism, a religion founded in 15th century Punjab, in 1971 after a bout with chronic fatigue syndrome led him to yoga for relief — explains how he combines traditional medical practices with acupuncture, homeopathy, herbs and vitamin therapies, particularly vitamin D. (Author of The Vitamin D Revolution, Khalsa says 90 percent of his new patients are D-deficient.)

Between optimum health and cancer, he says, there exists a “gray zone” in which organs might not be clinically diseased but still can cause symptoms Western medicine can’t detect or treat. “A lot of people’s problems — fatigue, backaches, migraines — are not well treated with traditional modalities like narcotics,” says the Yale-educated Khalsa, who was raised in Cincinnati, attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, has been on staff at Cedars-Sinai for 30 years and is a clinical instructor at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine.

Morgan Freeman and Judith Light are among his longtime devotees. Says Light: “I had just started Who’s the Boss? and was exhausted. Dr. Khalsa is a brilliant diagnostician — he saw all of these things that have been lifelong problems. I attribute my energy and much of the longevity of my career to him.”

A 45-year-old producer with ulcerative colitis that was not responding to steroids and immunosuppressive drugs was put on a regimen of Chinese herbs and acupuncture. “Over the course of six months, we tapered from a very high steroid dose to none at all,” Khalsa tells THR. “Some months later, his gastroenterologist did a colonoscopy and was shocked to see that there were no lesions in his colon.” Pronounces Freeman: “Dr. Khalsa was referred to me by a close friend. I am very grateful for the referral.”

I was so honored to be chosen to be the “centerfold” of the paper edition as pictured above shortly after I received my own copy of the magazine!

Hot Flashes Cause Millions of Dollars in Lost Wages

In a new study just published on August 27 in the journal Menopause, Phillip Sarrel, MD and colleagues have shown that moderate to severe hot flashes in menopausal women are not being treated in the majority of women. Women with hot flashes due to lack of hormonal replacement have many other symptoms in addition to just feeling hot. Other frequently occurring symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety and impaired shortterm memory.

Dr. Sarrel, the lead author, is quoted as saying “Not treating these common symptoms causes many women to drop out of the labor force at a time when their careers are on the upswing…This also places demands on health care and drives up insurance costs.”

The researchers analyzed data on health insurance claims from over 500,000 women. Half of these women had hot flashes and the other half did not. All were insured by Fortune 500 companies.

The findings are startling. Women who experienced hot flashes had 1.5 million more healthcare visits than women without hot flashes. “Costs for the additional health care was $339,559,458. The cost of work lost was another $27,668,410 during the 12 month study period.”

“Women are not mentioning it to their healthcare providers, and providers aren’t bringing it up,” said Sarrel.

“The symptoms can be easily treated in a variety of ways, such as with lowdose hormone patches, nonhormonal medications, and simple environmental adjustments such as cooling the workplace.”

From his comments I can see the Dr Sarrel is in agreement with me. Most, but not all, women in menopause will be significantly helped by bio identical hormone replacement therapy.

I want to remind all my readers and patients that the Women’s Health Initiative, which is the study that caused the reduction in the use of hormone replacement therapy was not reported correctly to us. The headlines did not indicate that the estrogen used in the study was from horses rather than human hormones. In addition the progesterone used in the study was not human progesterone, but was rather a pharmaceutically manufactured chemical that had progesterone – like effects.

With these startling statistics about women dropping out of the task force, please talk to your physicians about considering the use of bio identical hormone replacement when you or your loved one, goes into menopause.

More on Alzheimer’s Disease Risks

I have had a wellness oriented practice of medicine for over 30 years. My patients and readers all know that.

In the early 1980s I realized from evidence that was obvious in the medical literature even at that time, that smoking was bad for one’s health. I believed that anyone who is coming to me saying they wanted to improve their health, who was still smoking, was lying to themselves.

For that reason, I stopped seeing any new patients who were smoking. Over the years patients with significant health problems quit smoking, so that they could come and visit with me to begin using integrative medicine to improve their health.

Over the last decade now, the evils of smoking that were obvious to me and other physicians in the early 1980s have come to the forefront. Finally, after decades, the government has supported efforts to help people quit smoking.

“The U.S. Surgeon General and other public health authorities around the world have found that smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body and harms health at every stage of life. Yet we are continually learning new ways in which smoking harms health.

In the latest example, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Alzheimer’s Disease International are reporting, based on a review of scientific studies, that smokers have a 45 percent higher risk of developing dementia compared to nonsmokers. ”

This is an astonishing large percentage increase in a devastating disease just from smoking cigarettes.

My only question is “what took them so long?”

If you have a friend or relative who is still smoking, please ask them to quit!

Super Dangerous Kids Football Head Injuries & Strokes!

football injuriesMore than 55 percent of high school students participate in athletics, activities that can lend invaluable experiences in teamwork and dedication along with boosting self-esteem and physical fitness levels.

Among them, football is ranked the most popular sport for high school boys, with over 1.1 million high-school-aged participants across the country, according to the 2008-09 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

Unfortunately, football also results in more direct catastrophic injuries than any other sport tracked by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research, and appears to be much more dangerous at the high school level than the college level.

10 Riskiest Foods Revealed Which Foods are Most Likely to Make You Sick?

foodMassive egg recalls in past years, prompted by thousands of cases of Salmonella poisoning, is now safely behind us, but there are still foods lurking in your supermarket that have the potential to make you sick.

Food-borne diseases cause an estimated 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In all, about 200 diseases can be transmitted through food, including via viruses, bacteria, parasites, toxins, metals and prions. Most deadly, however, are bacteria, which account for 72 percent of food-related deaths, followed by parasites (21 percent), and viruses (7 percent). And though there are countless organisms that can make you ill, just five pathogens are responsible for 90 percent of food-related deaths each year. These include:

  1. Salmonella (31 percent)
  2. Listeria (28 percent)
  3. Toxoplasma (21 percent)
  4. Norwalk-like viruses (7 percent)
  5. Campylobacter (5 percent)
